Welcome to the “Casual Fan” section of The Show Notes! This is where I talk about sports. Certain aspects of what you read here, such as the depth of the analysis and amount of objectivity, will vary depending on a number of different factors. I promise to always be entertaining, though. Another week of football in the books, another week of Winners and Losers! No time to waste, let’s get into it!

Losers

  • Adam Schefter

I can’t believe it took so long for this dweeb to make an appearance here. Early Saturday morning, Schefter, who long ago sold his soul for clicks and access, tweeted out that the Cardinals were trading WR Marvin Harrison Jr. Okay, wonderful. Where was he going? Well, ol’ Adam wouldn’t tell us. Why not?

Well, several theories were floated. Maybe he didn’t know. Maybe this was a ploy to drive up engagement on his social media accounts. It’s also possible that Arizona didn’t actually have a trade partner yet, and Schefty was helping them create a market for MHJ. Perhaps it was a combination of all of these things. The only thing we know for sure is that it’s yet another pathetic, soulless move from a man who has managed to build a career off of pathetic, soulless moves. We did eventually find out where Harrison was headed when Texans coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed at his post-game press conference that Houston had traded for him. Thanks for nothing, Adam.

  • Dak Prescott

Ah, man. The Cowboys just couldn’t get rolling in their embarrassing Thursday night home loss to a Tampa Bay team led by an undrafted rookie QB. Dallas QB Dak Prescott threw 2 picks, including an especially brutal one that hit TE Jake Ferguson in the hands with the Cowboys deep in Tampa Bay territory with a chance to tie the game late in the 4th. Then, after the game ended, Dak was walking to the locker room when a car service driver waiting in the AT&T Stadium tunnel shouted, “Embarrassing!” at him. Dak looked back at the guy, then instructed a Cowboys employee to kick him out.

A tough spot for Dak, for sure. You want to confront the man, but can’t. You don’t want to let it slide either, though, so what do you do? I mean, I’d probably confront him anyway, but you shouldn’t listen to me about these things. Having the man escorted out isn’t the best look either. Neither is whining about the incident at the post-game press conference, which Dak did. This was probably his biggest mistake in his handling of the situation. Dallas will try to bounce back next week as they hit the road to take on a Green Bay team that suddenly looks competent.

Winners

  • Ejections

The Jaguars and Eagles got off to a wild start in London when Jacksonville DE Bryan Thomas Jr. and Philly LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. were ejected for fighting during the opening kickoff of the game. What’s crazy is the play, which ended in a touchdown for Jacksonville, ended up not counting because of offsetting penalties during the return. They had to redo the whole thing, so, technically, Thomas Jr. and Trotter Jr. were ejected before the game officially started. The ending was even wilder. More on that in a bit.

In another wild game, 49ers LB Dre Greenlaw was ejected for headbutting Seahawks LB Ernest Jones IV. The two came face-to-face after Greenlaw’s late hit on Seattle QB Sam Darnold. That play took place right on the Seahawks’ sideline, and the reaction is about what you’d expect. The NFL has suspended Greenlaw for his actions. This is kind of what he does, so yeah. San Francisco managed to win without him, 32-29, to remain undefeated.

  • Late-Game Blunders

Let’s start by going back to that Eagles game. Philadelphia appeared headed for their 3rd win of the season after a Jake Elliott field goal gave them a 17-16 lead with just 8 seconds left. All they had to do was cover the one last kickoff and perhaps a Hail Mary ending by the Jags. Apparently that’s much harder than it looks, because Jacksonville returner Ameer Abdullah ripped off a 53-yard return before being tackled with one second left on the Eagles’ 39-yard line. That was more than close enough for Jacksonville K Cam Little, who nailed a 57-yarder for the win. Probably a tough plane ride back to the States, huh?

The Eagles were not alone in their stupidity. Washington looked like they were going to survive a blown 14-point lead to snag a win against the Giants after RB Cam Skattebo fumbled with 2 minutes left in OT. In his first game back from injury, QB Jayden Daniels marched the Commanders down the field to the Giants’ 24-yard line with 12 seconds left. Instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock, he dropped back to pass before quickly deciding to run. Unfortunately, Washington was out of timeouts, and the clock ran out after Daniels was tackled at the line of scrimmage. The announcers were apoplectic. The Commanders had to settle for a tie that felt very much like a loss instead of attempting a 41-yard field goal for the win. Things are going great in the NFC East!
