Can you believe I made it this far into women’s college basketball season without sharing any thoughts? Well, lucky for you, that streak is over. Tap in as I discuss some of the major themes and storylines that have popped up during the course of the year!
Now, to the sports!

Women’s College Basketball: Tennessee Lady Vols @ #6 LSU Tigers at 6:00 pm (ET) on ESPN
It’s job-saving time for Kim Caldwell. The Lady Vols are currently in the middle of their bleakest stretch in program history. A hot start to the new year had them sitting atop the SEC, but they have now lost 7 of their last 9 games, including 4 straight. A trip to one of the nation’s most intimidating venues to face a team coming off a 53-point victory isn’t exactly a recipe for success, but they were in a similar spot heading into last year’s upset over UConn. Just, uh, don’t look at what happened in the game after that one.

Men’s College Basketball: #21 Miami (OH) RedHawks @ Western Michigan Broncos at 6:00 pm (ET) on CBSSN
As we all predicted, the only undefeated team in the nation as February comes to a close is Miami (OH). The RedHawks missed out on last year’s NCAA Tournament after surrendering a layup with 2.3 seconds left in last year’s MAC title game. Turns out you don’t have to worry about such things if you just secure an at-large bid before your conference tournament starts. It would appear they have done that, so now’s the chance to get familiar with them if you haven’t watched them play since the Wally Szczerbiak days.
Men’s College Basketball: #3 Michigan Wolverines @ #10 Illinois Fighting Illini at 8:00 pm (ET) on Fox
Less than a week after a video of him trashing Purdue went viral, Yaxel Lendeborg was once again the topic of discussion in the college basketball world after his bizarre press conference following Michigan’s loss to Duke. This time, though, it was for what he didn’t say. When asked what it was like guarding Duke star freshman Cameron Boozer, Lendeborg just smiled like a damn goofball until teammate Morez Johnson jumped in and answered the question like an adult.
Seriously, what the fuck was that? Bad news for Yaxel as the Fighting Illini have their own star freshman in Keaton Wagler. The Wolverines better get a win, or we could be in for another strange press conference. Illinois’ last 3 losses have all come in OT, so Dusty May should tell his team to aim for a tie in regulation. I’m a coaching genius.

Men’s College Basketball: #11 Virginia Cavaliers @ #1 Duke Blue Devils at 12:00 pm (ET) on ESPN
The Cavaliers have defeated a top-5 Duke team in Cameron Indoor Stadium just twice since 1993. The last time it happened, the Blue Devils were led by a freshman power forward who was projected to be a top-3 pick in that year’s NBA Draft. Does history repeat itself? They’ll have their work cut out for them because Duke has won 30 consecutive home games.
Men’s College Basketball: #14 Kansas Jayhawks @ #2 Arizona Wildcats at 4:00 pm (ET) on ESPN
You can’t have a college hoops Saturday without a Big 12 matchup, so keep it on ESPN. We’ve got a revenge game as the Jayhawks snapped the Wildcats’ 23-game win streak back on February 9th. Has Arizona figured out how to slow down Flory Bidunga? Worth noting that Kansas won that one without star freshman/habitual load manager Darryn Peterson, who was ruled out with flu-like symptoms after warmups.
Unrivaled Basketball: First Round coverage begins at 8:30 pm (ET) on TNT
The field is set for the chase to the second championship in Unrivaled history. See you next season, Lunar Owls and Hive. Seeding has to be figured out on Friday, but it’s playoff hoops. Tap in!

NBA: San Antonio Spurs @ New York Knicks at 1:00 pm (ET) on ABC
An NBA Cup rematch, and even more importantly, a 1999 NBA Finals rematch. The Spurs won that series in 5 games. The teams averaged a combined 164.6 points per game. They combined for 266 points when they played on New Year’s Eve. The late ‘90s were a different time. There will still be defense, though! Victor Wembanyama is the favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year, but teammate Stephon Castle should be in the conversation, too. He’s had opposing guards in hell all season long. Let’s see how Jalen Brunson deals with it. He’s a combined 21-51 in their matchups this year.
Men’s College Basketball: College of Charleston Cougars @ UNC Wilmington Seahawks at 7:00 pm (ET) on CBSSN
A showdown between the top 2 teams in the CAA as the regular season winds down. The Seahawks have beaten the Cougs in 6 straight games, including last season’s CAA semis en route to their 1st conference tournament title in 8 years. Takayo Siddle has got to be on the short list for bigger programs, right? 20+ wins in 5 straight seasons, they played Texas Tech, who made an Elite Eight run, close in the tournament last year, and they look even better this season. You hear that, South Carolina men’s basketball team?

Spring Training Baseball: Atlanta Braves vs. Detroit Tigers at 1:00 pm (ET) on ESPN
In case you needed proof/hope that we’re almost done with winter. There will be plenty of time to dive into previews and whatnot. For now, just enjoy the vibes of a lunchtime baseball game as we get ready for the World Baseball Classic to start.
Unrivaled Basketball: Semifinal coverage begins at 8:30 pm (ET) on TNT
You want a sleeper pick to make it this far? Last year’s champs, the Rose. Certainly not the season we expected from them, but they’ve got Chelsea Gray, who is leading the league in scoring and assists, and just added Angel Reese back into the mix. They had a similarly up-and-down regular season last year before going on their title run, so keep an eye on them! They’re taking the league on the road to NYC for this round.

English Premier League: Liverpool @ Wolverhampton at 3:15 pm (ET) on USA Network
You’re going to notice a theme for the day. Enjoy the Wolves playing EPL soccer while you can. Their incredible sorry 1 win in 28 matches has them as a lock for relegation with still 10 matches to play. As a bonus, this is sandwiched between episodes of Law & Order: SVU.
NBA: Phoenix Suns @ Sacramento Kings at 11:00 pm (ET) on NBC
If the NBA had relegation, the Kings would be preparing for the move down. Remember how exciting they were a couple of years ago when they won the Pacific Division and took the Warriors to 7 games in the first round? I’m not sure if we can even call what they’re doing tanking, because they’re not really blatantly trying to lose so much as they’re just bad. Back when these two played in November, a Kings super fan got thrown out after a verbal altercation with Zach Lavine over Sacramento’s defensive effort. They should let that man coach like Whoopi Goldberg in Eddie.
In all seriousness, I’m glad this game is on national TV. It feels like we get locked into seeing the same 4 to 6 teams over and over, so a little switch-up every so often is nice. And it’s on NBC, so you don’t have to hear the Inside The NBA crew complaining about how bad the Kings are. Also, things are looking up for them! They just snapped a 16-game losing streak!

Women’s College Basketball: SEC and ACC Tournament First Round coverage begins at 11:00 am (ET) on SEC Network and ACC Network
Can you believe it? It’s finally here. Conference tournament time is underrated, in my opinion. Games start a little bit earlier in the day, which is awesome. And, in the early round games especially, you get to see which teams have some fight in them and which ones are ready for spring break.
Women’s International Soccer: USA vs. Canada at 6:30 pm (ET) on TNT
Some SheBelieves Cup action. Team USA is looking to reclaim the title after Japan snapped its 5-year championship streak last year. The Japanese are participating in the Asian Cup instead, so we get to build on our Canadian rivalry right after defeating them in both the men’s and women’s hockey gold medal matches at the Winter Olympics. I can hear them brainstorming excuses already! Also, the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays in 7 games and made Ernie Clement sad. I generally have good feelings about Canadians, but the whining when they lose is upsetting when you are born and raised in a country that uses indignation instead.
Unrivaled Basketball: Championship coverage begins at 9:30 pm (ET) on TNT
Feels like that season flew by! Enjoy it, because there’s no telling when we get to see pro women’s hoops in this country again!
As always, thank you for reading! Make sure you subscribe so you get this in your inbox first thing every Thursday morning. Also, share with your friends! I’ll see you next week!
