Well, join me for the Beyond The Box Score series where I do just that! In the debut episode, let’s take a look at some college football stars who have a lesser-known namesake. Spoiler alert: sometimes the namesake is even more productive! Tap in and let me know what you think!

Now, to the sports!

  • Women’s College Basketball: Stonehill Skyhawks @ Fairleigh Dickinson Knights at 5:00 pm (ET) on ESPNU

I’m not going to lie, I picked this game because of Stonehill. I’d never heard of them, and I have no proof they’ve ever been on TV before. What I learned during my Stonehill educational deep dive is that they recently made the move up to Division I, and their head coach, Trisha Brown, is one of the longest-tenured coaches in women’s hoops! She’s going to need every bit of her 25 years of experience to take down the Knights, who are seeking to make it through a second straight NEC slate undefeated. Keep an eye on FDU sophomore G Ava Renninger!

  • Women’s College Basketball: Quinnipiac Bobcats @ Fairfield Stags @ 7:00 pm (ET) on ESPNU

Back-to-back on the U! Fairfield has lost 1 conference game total over the past 3 seasons. Wouldn’t you know it, that loss came in the final regular season last year against the Bobcats. Both teams are undefeated in conference MAAC play so far this season. My sources tell me that something has to give!

  • Unrivaled Basketball: Breeze vs. Phantom at 7:30 pm (ET) on TNT

Philly is Unrivaled! For the first time in the league’s brief history, games will be played somewhere other than Miami. Why you’d leave Miami in late-January and head up north, I have no idea. But hey, it could be fun! Speaking of fun, Breeze C Dominique Malonga dunked.

  • Unrivaled Basketball: Rose vs. Lunar Owls at 8:45 pm (ET) on TNT

A homecoming for Philly native and Rose player Kahleah Copper. Her 28-point outing on Monday was her best performance of the season so far. Probably bad news for the basement-dwelling Lunar Owls, who are coming off a heartbreaker against their former fellow basement-dwelling Hive. Marina Mabrey’s inability to control her emotions has led to the creation of a “Crash Out” jar fine system. This is corny.

  • Tennis: Australian Open Women’s Singles Championship at 3:30 am (ET) on ESPN

This has been an absolute shit show. First, Naomi Osaka’s opponent, Sorana Cirstea, complained about Osaka pumping herself up in between serves. This led to an icy post-match interaction after Osaka’s win. Then, Amanda Anisimova refused to answer press conference questions about the state of our country. Now, should we be turning to athletes in times like these? Probably not. But it must be nice to not have to think about it! I’m looking at all tennis players sideways until proven otherwise. And, most recently, ESPN cameras stayed glued to Coco Gauff as she smashed her racket out after a disappointing loss. This is the kind of thing die-hard tennis players care about. I have literally done that myself, and many equivalents in other sports.

So all of that leads to this. We’re still not sure who will play for the title, but there are some familiar names. Number one seed Aryna Sabalenka will seek her 3rd straight Aussie Open title against Elina Svitolina, who caused the Gauff racket smash. On the other side, American Jess Pegula took down Anisimova to reach the semis. Pegula also avoided questions about the state of the country! Her dad is billionaire Terry Pegula, who outbid Donald Trump for the Buffalo Bills. She’ll face Elena Rybakina, whom I have nothing bad to say about at the moment, but give me time. At worst, there’s a strong chance of a fun little hate watch!

  • Men’s College Basketball: #13 BYU Cougars @ #14 Kansas Jayhawks at 4:30 pm (ET) on ESPN

A matchup of Diaper Dandies! When he’s been healthy enough to play, the Jayhawks’ Darryn Peterson has drawn comparisons to Brandon Roy and Devin Booker. He missed Kansas’ last game, a win over rival Kansas State, but he should be good to go in this one. On the other side, AJ Dybantsa has drawn T-Mac and Jaylen Brown comparisons. He’s also been much healthier than Peterson, but there have been questions surrounding his performance against the top teams in the country. He’ll get a chance to answer them here. Both players are projected to be Top-5 draft picks in June.

  • Tennis: Australian Open Men’s Singles Championship at 3:30 am (ET) on ESPN

The off-court storylines haven’t been as interesting because the men are generally pretty boring, but hopefully the title match can make up for that. The final four consist of the top 4 seeds. This is the only Grand Slam title missing from 1-seed Carlos Alcaraz’s trophy case. He’ll face off against last year’s runner-up, 3-seed Alexander Zverev, for the chance to fix that. On the other side, 2-seed Jannik Sinner beat Zverev in last year’s final. He’s facing off against 4-seed Novak Djokovic, whose 10 titles here are the most by any man in the Open Era.

  • Women’s College Basketball: #15 Tennessee Volunteers @ #1 Connecticut Huskies at 12:00 pm (ET) on Fox

As much as things have changed in the world of women’s college hoops, this is still the matchup that comes to mind when I think of the sport. And they’re still both great programs! After some embarrassing non-conference losses, the Lady Vols sit atop the stacked SEC at 6-0 in conference play. This game kicks off one of the toughest stretches in the country, which will see Kim Caldwell’s team face 6 teams currently in the top 10 over their final 9 games.

The Huskies will be the best of those teams. UConn hasn’t lost a game since last year’s matchup with Tennessee. In fact, a December game against Big Ten leader Iowa was the last time they didn’t win a game by 40+ points, and they won that one by 26. At the moment, the National Player of the Year award is Sarah Strong’s to lose. If she were playing anywhere else, we might be saying the same about teammate Azzi Fudd. A ton of talent on both ends. Tap in!

  • Men’s College Basketball: #9 Illinois Fighting Illini @ #5 Nebraska Cornhuskers at 4:00 pm (ET) on FS1

The Cornhuskers’ dream season continues, but they’re going to have their hands full with Keaton Wagler and the Fighting Illini. The star freshman had a performance for the ages as he dropped 46 points to help Illinois take down then-#4 Purdue on the road. Some are saying that Big Ten basketball is back!

  • NBA: Los Angeles Lakers @ New York Knicks at 7:00 pm (ET) on NBC

In the middle of Baxter Holmes’ report about the Buss family turmoil surrounding the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers, it was revealed that Jeanie Buss is kind of sick of LeBron’s shit. Now, in response, LeBron claimed, “I don’t care how somebody feels about me.” Whether or not that’s true, other totally coincidental reports have come out claiming that the Cavaliers would welcome a LeBron reunion and that James didn’t ask the Lakers to draft son Bronny (HA!). So, hey, who knows? However, the man always puts on a show at Madison Square Garden, and the end is probably near, so enjoy it while you can!

  • Women’s College Basketball: North Carolina Tar Heels @ NC State Wolfpack at 6:00 pm (ET) on ESPN2

At first glance, the Wolfpack have underachieved. The preseason #9 team now finds itself on the outside of the AP Top 25 altogether. But could brighter days be on the horizon? While they already have nearly as many losses as they did all of last season, none of those losses have come by more than 10 points. An 11th consecutive 20+ win season is still in their sights. Let’s see if they can get one win closer against rival North Carolina.

  • NBA: Boston Celtics @ Dallas Mavericks at 8:00 pm (ET) on NBC

What would Celtics fans give to have an American-born white star like Cooper Flagg? Hell, the kid grew up a huge Celtics fan! Bill Simmons is probably trying to make this happen as we speak. The Celtics are 2nd in the East without Jayson Tatum. Which side would turn down a Tatum for Flagg swap? Probably Dallas now that Nico is gone, right? Anyways, a big reason Boston hasn’t skipped a beat is Jaylen Brown. He’s probably who you should be paying attention to in this one. This is his first year as the undisputed man on the team, and he’s responded admirably.

  • NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder @ San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 pm (ET) on ESPN

Okay, fuck it, let’s do this one again. Do they even play any other teams? The Spurs have pretty much had the Thunder’s number all season, save for their last meeting. That loss shook them up so bad that Victor Wembanyama and Keldon Johnson shaved each other’s heads. Welcome to the club, fellas. I guess this begs the question, what gets shaved if they lose again? Sorry for that mental image.
